The Museum is a dynamic cultural center featuring dynamic exhibits and programs that combine science, art, and history. With interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences, the museum aims to educate children about their heritage and inspire educators to use the resources the museum offers. The museum's collection includes over 20,000 objects, as well as archival holdings, magazines, and audio/video tapes.

Children will enjoy the Dollhouse exhibit, located in the museum's Educational Wing. This two-story house is fully furnished with scaled furniture and a kitchen. They can also play with dolls in the living room and bedroom. The museum also features toys from various eras, including the early 1900s to the present. Parents will also enjoy seeing these toys that were popular when they were kids.

The Children's Museum of Oak Ridge is operated by a nonprofit corporation that provides educational programs and museum exhibits to children in the community. It began as a Girl Scout project in 1973. It was initially housed in the library of Jefferson Junior High School. In 1983, the museum was relocated to the former Highland View Elementary School.

The museum also houses the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders. The museum also features a large train set with two trains that constantly circle one another. The model wraps around to show 3 different scenes. You can visit special events and train-themed weekends to get a taste of the world of trains. For toddlers, the exhibit also has a hands-on play area and a HO scale layout.

In addition to regular exhibits, the museum also hosts special events like the Children's Book Club. Children can win free books by participating in this program. The Museum is free to visit for a single day, and children under three will receive a special rate. You can also sign up for a Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for younger children. Next.

Oak Ridge Museum is located about 30 minutes from downtown Knoxville. It is closed during inclement weather but is open Mondays during the summer months. Kids will love the two model cabins inside. They will find it fun to carry their pails on their shoulder yokes. They will also see how good it is to have modern conveniences. Visiting the museum is an excellent family activity. This is a great way to introduce children to the history of Oak Ridge.
